STORY: The series revolves around Yashwardhan Chauhan (Zayn Ibad Khan), a police officer who is haunted by the deaths of close family members, and Chikki Sharma (Khushi Dubey), who aspires to be a police officer like her father but fails the entrance exams. Is it fate that brings them together when they occasionally cross paths?

REVIEW: To begin with, ‘Aashiqana’ is a full-fledged daily soap drama that is currently streaming on the OTT platform. The only difference is that the series employs gaalis without muting, as well as some spectacular Bollywood-style action stunts and VFX effects that distinguish it from other TV dramas. Series creator and producer Gul Khan who has co-written the series with Sudhir Kumar Singh, presents a romance between two wounded souls set against a backdrop of murder. Every episode lasts about 20-25 minutes and is chock-full of overacting from the entire cast as well as a lot of dialoguebaazi with a dash of humour. The cinematography and production design are on-point, displaying some incredible action sequences but lacking a compelling story that can retain your attention throughout.

This series has an unspecified total number of episodes and moves at a leisurely pace, with no rush to solve the mystery. In short, it takes a considerable amount of time. The plot takes place in Mumbai, where a masked assailant goes on a killing spree, prompting ACP Yashwardhan Chauhan to embark on a mission to apprehend the perpetrator. Things change when the masked man challenges Yash and makes feisty Chikki Sharma his next target. Chikki's and Yash's fates are intertwined, causing them to cross paths frequently. Despite their bizarre first encounter, Yash and Chikki share another bond: they both lost loved ones who were police officers and are coping with their loss.

Based on the first nine episodes that have been aired so far, the series is exciting in parts, but the romance is still fading. The narrative raises awareness of the gender biases that still persist in our society. Unfortunately, while the story may appear appealing on paper, the execution is little more than an exaggerated depiction of technology.

In terms of acting, Zayn Ibad Khan gives a convincing performance as a no-nonsense cop, although he maintains the same expression throughout. He is no less than any Bollywood hero, from his spectacular entrance to his action antics. Khushi Dubey, on the other hand, overreacts to practically everything, which eventually becomes unbearable. So far, their chemistry hasn't been blazing yet, but they are compatible when it comes to solving a case. Yash’s co-workers, like the lead cast's family members, are only used as caricatures in the show.

All said, ‘Aashiqana’ is just another soap opera with the Bollywood tadka. However, it’s a mediocre love story set against an intriguing thriller with outstanding production values. Only watch it if you have time to devote to it on a regular basis, as new episodes are released daily.
