A sustained and strong economic growth since the beginning of the last decade helped Bangladesh qualify for lowermiddle-income status in 2015 and to remain on the course to graduate from the UN’s Least Developed Countries (LDCs) group in 2026. The impetus for this econoinic growth emerged mainly from the liberalisation of trade and financial sector. favourable demographic factors, financial inclusion, and macroeconomic stability. Alongside, a stride in labour-intensive manufacturing exports, led by ready-made garments (RMG), also contributed to achieving remarkable economic growth, creating employment, and reducing poverty. Registering a 10.25 percent average annual growth rate over the last two decades, export earnings of the country stood at US$ 46.36 billion in 2019 which was 15.32 percent of GDP. However, the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic as an external shock, caused a decline in the export of Bangladesh by 16.23 percent to 12.18 percent of GDP in 2020, while world export shrunk by 8.98 percent. It is argued that the highly concentrated export basket and export market prompted the negative impact of the pandemic on Bangladesh’s export. As the export of an economy largely depends on external demand, the vulnerability in exports may emerge from economic shocks originating in its export destinations. The impact of the external shock largely depends on the degree of concentration of the country’s export portfolio. A concentrated export basket and export market amplifies the vulnerability of an economy to external shocks. Therefore, to strengthen resilience to external shocks and to achieve a higher sustainable rate of economic growth, Bangladesh should pursue policies to diversify exports.

Most of the river dries up during the dry season. Waste products from home and factories around the river are dumped into it indiscriminately. The Surma in now a dying river due to Chars and pollution.

The prevalence of teenage employment in Bangladesh is controversial. Questions have been raised regarding whether adolescents should work and if they do, what the terms and conditions will be. It is argued that work experience can promote the healthy development of adolescents when it is moderate in intensity and does not interfere with physical and mental growth. According to Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, an adolescent is defined as a person above the age of 14 but below 18. According to the law, before the appointment of a job, ascertainment of the age, birth, school, or registered physician’s certificate regarding the age of the adolescent shall be used. After the appointment, some other conditions shall have to be followed regarding working hours, hazardous works, etc. Adolescents shall not be required to work between 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and the working hours shall not be more than 5 hours in a day and 32 hours in a week. In addition, adolescents shouldn’t clean, lubricate or adjust any part of machinery in motion. Further, the employment of adolescents on dangerous machines without full instruction, precaution, and sufficient training, is prohibited. However, the proper implementation of existing regulations is questionable. For the smooth physical and mental development of adolescents, the authorities should implement the laws strictly to build up a healthy and prosperous generation.
