Maldives President Ibrahim Mohammed Salih has termed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as one of the greatest men in the history of South Asia. He has made a permanent seat in the hearts of the people who hope for democracy and freedom.

He inaugurated the birth centenary of the architect of Bangladesh and the golden jubilee of the country's independence at the National Parade Ground today.

Joining the function, he said, "He (Bangabandhu) is one of the great men in the history of South Asia, whose activities have played a leading role in determining the individual destiny of the people of Bangladesh."

Salih said, "The architect of Bangladesh will forever have a place of honor in the hearts of those who aspire for democracy and independence."

Joining the ten-day celebrations as one of the five leaders of South Asia, the Maldivian president said Bangabandhu had been a "compromising proponent" of democracy and political freedom throughout his life.

Salih said, ‘He has often spoken out in favor of the values that resonated in the minds of people of all walks of life. His six-point program laid the foundation for Bangladesh's independence and laid down the underlying values of the country's constitution.

The Maldivian leader said Bangabandhu's speech on March 7, in particular, was a testament to his "skill and great historical position" in declaring Bangladesh's independence. That is why UNESCO has registered it in the Memory of the World Register as a documentary heritage.

Despite his tragic death, his legacy will not be forgotten, "said Salih.

He congratulated Bangladesh for its significant contribution to the quality of life and development of the people of Bangladesh and said, "Bangladesh has made significant progress in economic development.".

"The Maldives is grateful for the friendship we enjoy with the people of Bangladesh," he said. Bangladesh has helped us to face many challenges that we have faced due to coronavirus. We are forever grateful for the help of food, personal protective equipment, and medical supplies. "

He said Bangladesh has recently taken a great liberal step by sending a team of healthcare professionals from the Bangladesh Air Force to build healthcare in the Maldives.

Salih said, ‘Earlier last year, a medical team from Bangladesh visited the Maldives. The Maldives is very grateful for this decision, and we recognize it as a reflection of the strong relationship between our two countries. "

The President of the Maldives described the Bangladesh-Maldives cooperation as "extensive" and said, "We rely on your assistance in various areas of human resource development, especially health and medical care."

He said that as a low-lying country in the Indian Ocean, climate change has emerged as an urgent mutual priority for both countries. We commend Bangladesh for its pioneering role in the Maldives Climate Risk Forum and its efforts to develop a Blue Economy. The blue economy is our common goal. '

He expressed his country's interest in continued cooperation in tackling the existential threat posed by climate change. Referring to the fact that Bangladeshis are currently one of the largest expatriate workforces in the Maldives, Salih said, "Their contribution to the socio-economic development of our country is immense."
